Flutter vs React Native: Which Should You Choose for Your Business App?

By Ismam Khan8 min read

Introduction

Overview

Flutter and React Native are the two most popular ways to build one app for both iOS and Android. Both are mature, both power apps used by millions, and both can deliver an excellent business app. The right choice depends on your app, your team and your plans. This guide compares them in plain terms and explains when fully native development is worth the extra cost.

01

The Short Answer

Both frameworks let one team build one codebase that ships to both app stores. For most business apps (booking, ordering, customer portals, field-team tools) either will do the job well. The decision usually comes down to the team that will build and maintain it, and how custom your app's design is.

We build in Flutter, so read the rest with that in mind; we have tried to be fair to both.

How They Differ

Flutter, backed by Google, draws its own interface using its own rendering engine. The app looks and behaves the same on every device, and highly custom designs and animations are straightforward. Apps are written in Dart.

React Native, backed by Meta, uses the platform's native interface components and is written in JavaScript or TypeScript. That suits teams who already build for the web with React, and apps that should feel exactly like each platform's defaults.

Comparing What Matters to a Business

• Design: Flutter makes pixel-consistent, branded designs easier; React Native leans on each platform's look. • Performance: both are fast enough for typical business apps; Flutter tends to be smoother for heavy animation. • Development speed: both offer fast iteration; the bigger factor is your team's experience. • Hiring: React Native draws on the large JavaScript talent pool; Flutter developers are fewer but the framework is easy to learn. • Web and desktop: Flutter can target web and desktop from the same code, useful for admin tools; React Native focuses on mobile. • Long-term maintenance: both are actively maintained by large companies and communities.

When to Go Fully Native

Native development (Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android) means two codebases and roughly double the work, but it can be the right call when an app depends heavily on cutting-edge device features, needs the absolute best performance in games or complex graphics, or must adopt new platform features the day they launch. For most business apps those reasons do not apply, which is why cross-platform is usually the better investment. Our mobile app cost guide explains how this choice affects budget.

Why We Build in Flutter

For the apps our clients need — customer apps, vendor and field-team apps, ordering and booking — Flutter lets us ship one consistent, polished app to both stores, keep features in sync, and reuse code for admin tools. Every app connects to a real backend and admin panel, which matters more to long-term success than the framework itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

Is Flutter better than React Native?

Neither is better for every project. Flutter suits highly branded, consistent designs and multi-platform reuse; React Native suits teams with React experience and apps that follow native platform styles.

02

Is Flutter good for business apps?

Yes. Flutter is widely used for business apps such as booking, ordering, customer portals and internal tools, with one codebase for iOS and Android.

03

Is cross-platform cheaper than native?

Usually. One codebase for both platforms means less development and maintenance than two separate native apps.

04

When should I build a native app?

When the app depends on cutting-edge device features, demanding graphics, or must adopt new platform features immediately. Most business apps do not need this.
